“Tout Bien ou Rien”
When we Say “Tout Bien ou Rien” we mean that the goods we offer must be the very best or we will not carry them.
History
Maison Glass, a world-class gastronomic emporium, was founded in 1902 by Ernest H. E. Glass, a fiery red-headed Parisian who came to New York to bring French delicacies to the United States. Its first stop was located on East 47th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues. It very soon became a beacon unto a carriage-trade clientele who sought the international specialties which Maison Glass purveyed.
Since those early days, Maison Glass became a leader in providing services not found elsewhere: telephone service with intelligent personnel taking orders; our own delivery vans with uniformed drivers; world-wide shipping, custom-made gift baskets and hampers; a catalogue of its products – which had an international mailing; and, of course, personalized service for all customers that visited the shop.
In the early forties, Maison Glass, moved its shop to 58th Street because the building in which it was located was being demolished for a Rockefeller Center addition. After forty-five years at that location – the shop, which was a low-key long narrow space in an old brownstone with a private club atmosphere, was again forced to relocate, again due to the demolition of the building. Fortunately, Maison Glass was able to move diagonally across the street into a new shop which recreated the look of its original 1902 shop. In the late 70s our new branch opened at the Citicorp Center on East 53rd Street.
In the late 90s, the retail store was forced to relocate again, however, this time we did not seek a new retail location but embarked on the new wave of the future: mail order. Currently, Maison Glass is operating solely as a mail-order distributor of its selection of domestic specialties, private label, and international products featuring the foods of the world. Of course, the products purveyed are quite extensive – caviar, foie gras, truffles, smoked Scottish salmon, game, cheeses, pates, Virginia hams, nuts, chocolates, candies, preserves, honeys, mustards, oils, vinegars, herbs, spices, coffees, teas, biscuits, cookies, crackers – just to name a few.
We are proud to be a New York City Institution, currently cited in dozens of cookbooks, food periodicals, TV Food Network, and assorted publications. Our merchandise carries an assurance of absolute satisfaction. When we say “Tout Bien ou Rien” we mean that the goods we offer must be the very best, or we will not carry them. Maison Glass will continue the century old tradition of service “par excellence” well into the next century.
